Dental implants in Friedrichshain: safety & comfort

If you have lost a tooth, the gap should definitely be filled with a suitable denture be closed. This is the only way to keep the important functions of the chewing apparatus intact and prevent consequential damage. Modern dentistry has various methods of restoration, with a dental implant being the best solution for most patients: The base of a dental implant is firmly anchored in the jawbone, so that the denture placed on it fits reliably and thus offers the wearer a great deal of security. Even with a full restoration, an implant-supported full denture is safer and more comfortable to wear than would be the case with conventional prosthetics without implants.

Dental implants for the third teeth

While for most people the term “dental implant” refers to the entire structure for replacing a lost tooth through implantation, the actual implant for a tooth is actually only the part of the structure that represents the artificial tooth root. It consists of an implant body – usually cylindrical in shape and provided with a thread – which is inserted into the jawbone. The implant abutment serves as a connecting piece between the implant body and the implant crown, which ultimately forms the visible part of the dental prosthesis.

Nowadays, dental implants are usually made of titanium, and more rarely of ceramic. The crown of the implant is custom-made by specialized dental technicians and also meets aesthetic requirements, for example with ceramic veneers in the same color as the tooth. Implants are also recommended in many cases for the long-term provision of attractive and secure dentures due to their high durability compared to conventional methods: With good oral hygiene, titanium implants last a lifetime.

Various application possibilities

Implants can be used to replace individual teeth, close larger gaps in the row of teeth or replace the entire denture with a full denture. The dentist advises his patients and will assess which form of tooth replacement is the best choice for the individual case. One advantage of dental implants in Friedrichshain that always applies is that they stop the bone loss in the jaw that occurs when teeth are missing.

  • Tooth replacement for single teeth: If only a single tooth with healthy neighboring teeth is replaced, an implant instead of the tooth, but also a bridge is conceivable. The main disadvantage of the latter is that the healthy teeth have to be ground down in order to serve as attachment points for the bridge. As the preservation of natural teeth should be the main focus of dental treatment, a dental implant is often the better alternative in these cases.
  • Closing gaps in the dental arch: Depending on the size of the gap and the number of remaining natural teeth, both a fixed bridge and a dental implant can be considered. Here too, the disadvantages of the bridge are the need to grind down healthy teeth and the shorter lifespan. If implants are conceivable as a tooth replacement, this type of restoration is usually recommended.
  • Edentulous jaw: A conventional maxillary prosthesis is conventionally held in place only by the adhesive effect. The adhesion is created by the suction effect caused by negative pressure between the palate or gums and the prosthesis during insertion, provided that the fit is accurate. Changes in the jawbone therefore reduce the adhesive effect over time. An implant-supported prosthesis, on the other hand, offers patients a more stable hold. In the case of lower jaw dentures, no adhesive effect can be achieved anyway due to the anatomical conditions, so that an implant-supported denture provides even better comfort. The wearer feels just as securely anchored in the jaw with implants as they do with their natural teeth.

The general procedure of an implant treatment

As part of the treatment before an implantation, your dentist in Friedrichshain must determine whether the necessary conditions for the procedure are met. For example, if an implant is planned for the tooth or entire areas, it must be checked whether there is inflammation in the bone and whether there is sufficient bone substance to anchor dental implants. If this is not the case, bone augmentation can be performed prior to the operation.

For the procedure, the affected area of the jaw is usually locally anaesthetized using an injection so that the operation is painless and the patient does not feel anything from the implantation. Alternatives such as sedation or general anesthesia are also available. After consultation with the dentist, these can also be used, for example for anxious patients. Once the anaesthetic has taken effect, the jawbone is exposed, the implant site is drilled and the dental implant is placed.

If closed healing is planned for the dental implant, the artificial tooth root is closed with a cover and the gums are sutured over it. This allows the dental implant to grow well into the bone. With open healing, part of the implant protrudes into the oral cavity and is provisionally restored until the final crown is fitted. After approximately three months, the healing phase is over and the implant is firmly fused and load-bearing so that the crown can finally be permanently inserted.
